Menieres Disease! What the hell is Menieres Disease??….Prior to my diagnosis I was using different things to help with my symptoms which had progressed to a constant state of motion sickness, ear pressure, sensitivity to loud sharp noises, occasional ringing in my ears, and the occasional bought of vertigo which would literally make me have to lay down or fall down.
I was on duty one shift and discussing things over with my Captain we decided to try a liquid ear wax remover bought from our local drug store. I went to my bunk and and proceeded to preform the task of using the new found hopeful cure. GET THIS OUT OF MY EARS!….. Well I’m assuming that the pain means it wasn’t working. After another conversation with my Captain he decides to read the box. “Do not use if you have the following….” As my Captain is reading through the list I’m say “Nope, No, Don’t have that.” “What’s Menieres Disease?” He says. So luckily we live in a beautiful age of knowledge and a few taps later I’m going “I have all of those symptoms!?!”
So figuring this out, I went to my local ENT who in turn sent me to another ENT in Las Vegas, NV. What a horrible experience. Trying to drive with a bucket in case I got ill during the trip. Elevation changes were also very difficult. They still are to a point even today. So two days in Las Vegas at a Dr’s office for testing and evaluation. So Menieres Disease it was indeed. The ENT wanted to start looking at surgery immediately. Brain surgery he called it. One option was to go in and cut out part of the coclea so it could drain better. The second would be to sever the nerve connecting the inner ear to my brain. “UMMM wait what?!!?…” “Oh and by the way you have Menieres Disease in both ears not just one. So its a 50/50 shot if we cut the worse one or not…”
As you could imagine after that trip I was more scared then ever. I have a Dr. telling me that I probably wont be able to go back to firefighting ever again and he wants to cut nerves to my brain. Screw that! I researched, and looked, and looked. Finally I came across a post I found from Dana White talking about his Menieres Disease.
This video sent me on a fast track of research and development as you could imagine. A possible cure?… I was combating with everything I had and was losing badly. The straw on the camels back for me was having to miss my family’s once in a life time vacation to Hawaii due to this extreme motion sickness. After that it was time to make some life altering decisions. I was working close with my Chiropractor for adjustments to my Atlas joint or C1 joint. I found research showing that Menieres Disease was linked to trauma in the cervical spine.
So I was having that treatment done and keeping to my new Menieres Disease diet…like it wasn’t bad enough right? Now a diet!… which consisted of low sodium 1,500mg or less a day, zero caffeine, zero alcohol, and control my stress and fatigue levels. So all the stuff that firefighters and EMS personnel run off of in a daily bases I am now having to stay away from entirely…..UGH!!! (Add super dramatic eye rolling and throwing my head back here)
Alright, so I need to cut back on the salt who doesn’t. I’m not a big drinker anyway so no big deal there, but coffee…….I had become quite the devourer of coffee. The stress came with the disease regardless of what I tried to do and fatigue was easy enough to control….when I was off duty.
In the mean time I researched what treatment Dana White had received for his issues. I knew flying to Germany wasn’t going to be an option for me, but my wife said that we could make it work. God bless that woman! Luckily I was able to locate some facilities in the US that did the same exact treatments! WHOO HOO!!! I don’t have to fly with this super motion sickness disease!
https://www.lifespanmedicine.com/ So I had found Lifespan Medicine. Now what? Reviewing the website and calling and talking to them really helped. Eventually I got so far I even got to talk to a Dr. The Regenokine therapy life span medicine was the greatest place on the planet to me at the time. Calling their office and getting every thing set up was amazing. I cannot say enough good things about them!
So to explain the Regenokine therapy it is a treatment that involves drawing out a certain amount of your own blood isolating the anti-inflammatory process’s in your blood and expounding them in a lab and re-injecting that concoction back into your muscles. Now let me just warn you here. The Regenokine therapy is solely for major and minor joints. I used the treatment for my Lumbar spine which I had other significant issues in. Which it was amazing for my back!!!!
OK the kicker! So Lifespan Medicine works in holistic treatments. Whats the one problem with holistic healing problems??… Anyone? HOLISTIC TREATMENTS ARE NOT COVERED BY MEDICAL INSURANCE! (Re-insert eye and head rolling) My Lumbar treatment cost me $15,000. Yes that fifteen thousand American dollars. Menieres Disease is inflammation caused or it is not. So Dr. Ben-Roohi literally gave me a 50/50 chance that my treatment would help my Menieres or not. Hmmm so lets take $15k and slap it on the table and spin the roulette wheel right! Well I landed on black baby! I woke up the second day of treatment and started to feel…..different to say the least. I wasn’t nauseous though which was a huge bonus.
The Dr. liked my improvements and stated that I would have approximately 4 years before I would have to redo the process. That was exciting news considering my loan for the treatment was a 5 year loan. But here we are 2 1/2 years later and I’ve felt some changes each year around the time I got the shots. I had to figure something else out. I began to research again and came across different diets I would try to stick with that would reflect what I was supposed to be doing now. Every few months I would have to re-evaluate what I was doing.
Time and time again I could not seem to find anything that would effectively help me in the long run. Whatever I did would end up catching up to me and make me feel bad again. I was eating what the typical American diet considered to be healthy, but for me it wasn’t even close. Then came a new journey. Health and Wellness.
